Ron - It 's so you can see the ball in the SNOW that never falls on the under soil heated pitches and that we never play in anyway because of "spectator safety " issues.
Or......it's to do with advertising and making money. As per usual.

Only a matter of time before balls have built-in flashing lights.
Then they'll start on the goalposts, the pitch markings, and they'll bring back plastic grass.
But this time it'll be compulsory, and it won't be green.
Modern football is still just about ok.
